Technology has greatly increased the speed at which musical novelty becomes trend and then total market saturation -- to the point that not even the most extreme sounds are safe from excessive repetition. This is said by way of introduction because Germany's Alpinist fall into the same, all too abruptly jam-packed, black-crust-core category, which of late has been bursting at the seams with bands like Black Breath, Trap Them, the Secret, and the list goes on.... Yes, there are certainly distinctions between all these, depending on who's blacker, crustier, or core-ummmm-ier, but try telling that to average Joe buying public -- the minutiae can be baffling. Having said that, let's now give due credit to Alpinist's distinctly hardcore-focused brand of black-crust-core, as profiled by this combo CD pairing the group's first two, vinyl-only LPs -- Lichtlærm and Minus.Mensch -- into one handy introductory package. Not only do standout offerings like 'Aidt,' 'Project Fatigue,' and 'Nighttime Poet Daytime Dead' keep things interesting with lots of independent guitar parts bouncing off each other, they avoid the common, boredom-inducing mistake of pursuing total sonic Armageddon at all times (though Alpinist can pull that stunt too, if it's your thing, ergo 'Schalterhygiene,' 'Delta Flood of Ignorance', etc.). Heck, a few cuts even lock into rather slow tempos for the duration (see 'Yarncarrier and Break,' 'This Song Will Not Save Your Life'), while others are comprised of nothing but instrumental sound collages ('Light,' 'Laerm,' 'Outro'). As a result of this punk-sourced variety, it's pretty easy to pinpoint Oregonian legends Tragedy as Alpinist's biggest single influence, but that shouldn't diminish recognition for the Germans' ability to bake their own cupcakes with that recipe. Lichtlærm and Minus.Mensch are both mighty fine cupcakes (the first slightly more savory than the second), even if this crust-core bakery appears to be sprouting new franchises faster than consumers may care for. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

As one of the most massive and successful business sectors, the pharmaceutical industry is a potent force for good in the community, yet its behaviour is frequently questioned: could it serve society at large better than it has done in the recent past? Its own internal ethics, both in business and science, may need a careful reappraisal, as may the extent to which the law - administrative, civil and criminal - succeeds in guiding (and where neccessary contraining) it. The rules of behavior that may be considered to apply to today's pharmaceutical industry have emerged over a very long period and the process goes on. Even the immensely detailed standards for quality, safety and efficacy laid down in drug law and regulation during the second half of the twentieth century have their limitations as tools for ensuring that the public interest is well served. In particular, national and regional regulatory agencies are heavily dependent on industrial data for their decision-making, their standards and competence vary, and even the existing network of agencies does not cover the entire world. What is more there are many areas of law and regulation affecting the industry, concerning for example the pricing of medicines, the conduct of clinical studies, the health protection of workers and concern for the environment. In some fields it is indeed hardly possible to maintain standards through regulation.Professor N.M. Graham Dukes, a physician and lawyer with long term experience in industrial research management, academic study and international drug policy, provides here a powerfully documented analysis into the way this industry thinks, acts, and is viewed, and examines the current trends pointing to change.*Provides a balanced picture of the current role of the pharmaceutical industry in society*Includes indices of conventions, laws, and regulations; as well as judicial and disciplinary cases*This is the only book addressing the legal implications of big pharma activities and ethical standards
This new text is a detailed study of an important process in modern Indian history. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, India experienced an intellectual renaissance, which owed as much to the influx of new ideas from the West as to traditional religious and cultural insights. Gosling examines the effects of the introduction of Western science into India, and the relationship between Indian traditions of thought and secular Western scientific doctrine. He charts the early development of science in India, its role in the secularization of Indian society, and the subsequent reassertion, adaptation and rejection of traditional modes of thought. The beliefs of key Indian scientists, including Jagadish Chandra Bose, P.C. Roy and S.N. Bose are explored and the book goes on to reflect upon how individual scientists could still accept particular religious beliefs such as reincarnation, cosmology, miracles and prayer. Science and the Indian Tradition gives an in-depth assessment of results of the introduction of Western science into India, and will be of interest to scholars of Indian history and those interested in the interaction between Western and Indian traditions of intellectual thought.
For the estimated 2 million families in the United States waiting to adopt a child, the decision of which avenue to pursue can be overwhelming: domestic or international, older child versus younger, children with special needs--and the list goes on. This title offers all the information any potential or newly adoptive parent might need. This essential guidebook is packed with reassuring advice on how to handle the most common issues: questions to ask before adopting; bonding techniques--from newborn to teenager; adopting children with special needs; navigating international adoptions; helping the adopted child understand and cope with feelings of loss and abandonment; and navigating blended families, single parenting, or same-sex partnerships. With this book by their side, adoptive parents will bond with their child for a lifetime!
Polls consistently show that most Americans are progressives at heart. By margins of at least two to one, we favor affordable healthcare for all, even if it means raising taxes; want federal action to combat global warming; support stricter gun control; don't want Roe vs. Wade overturned; and the list goes on. So why is it so hard for progressive candidates to win elections?Because, says Bernie Horn, most progressives don't know how to explain their ideas in ways that resonate with "e;persuadables"e;-the significant slice of the electorate who don't instantly identify as Democrats or Republicans. These are the voters who swing elections. There's been a lot of theoretical discussion about framing lately, but Framing the Future isn't theory-the concepts outlined have been used successfully by progressive candidates across the nation, even in such conservative bastions as Montana, Arizona, and Florida. Drawing on rigorous polling data and his own experience as a veteran political consultant, Horn explains how persuadable voters think about issues and make political decisions and why, as a result, the usual progressive approaches are practically designed to fail with them. He offers a crash course in the nuts and bolts of framing and shows how to use three bedrock American values-freedom, opportunity, and security-to frame progressive positions in a way that creates a consistent, unified political vision that will appeal to persuadable voters. He even offers advice on specific words and phrases to use when talking about a variety of issues and ideas.

Web users are getting tired of the traditional web experience. They get frustrated losing their scroll position; they get annoyed waiting for refresh; they struggle to reorient themselves on every new page. And the list goes on. With asynchronous JavaScript and XML, known as 'Ajax,' you can give them a better experience. Once users have experienced an Ajax interface, they hate to go back. Ajax is a new way of thinking that can result in a flowing and intuitive interaction with the user. Ajax in Action helps you implement that thinking - it explains how to distribute the application between the client and the server (hint: use a 'nested MVC' design) while retaining the integrity of the system. You will learn how to ensure your app is flexible and maintainable, and how good, structured design can help avoid problems like browser incompatibilities. Along the way it helps you unlearn many old coding habits. Above all, it opens your mind to the many advantages gained by placing much of the processing in the browser. If you are a web developer who has prior experience with web technologies, this book is for you. What's Inside - Ajax principles; - Why Ajax design patterns matter; - How to avoid Ajax pitfalls; - Examples of Ajax in action: type-ahead suggest, live searching using XSL, " many more; - Examples using Ajax frameworks: Prototype, Scriptaculous, x and Rico; - Ajax usability, security, and performance.

As Inspector Jefe Javier Falc-n investigates the case of a faceless, mutilated corpse, the beautiful city of Seville is rocked by a massive explosion. The discovery of a mosque in the basement of a devastated apartment building confirms everybody's fears of terrorism. Panic sweeps the city and the region goes on red alert. As more bodies are dragged from the rubble, the media interest and political pressure intensify and Falc-n suspects that all is not what it appears to be. Just as he comes clo
As London simmers through a heat wave, racial tension mounts in the East End. A religious leader dies, a political leader fans the flames, an immigrant community’s anger grows. Then an arsonist sets fire to an Asian cinema leaving hundreds dead, and the mob goes on a rampage. Their first target is the fire department. Jay’s stumbled into a whirlwind of violence and drug dealing, and to get out alive, he’ll have to nail a brutal criminal.

Five years after the release of their critically acclaimed Odyssey, New Jersey prog metal quintet Symphony X have taken as their inspiration John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost as a follow-up. The poem, about the fall from grace of Adam and Eve and the rise of Satan's presence as prince of the world, seems like a fitting theme for a heavy metal album, but it's an ambitious one and for a lesser act, would prove to be impossibly daunting. The most immediately apparent thing about the sound of this album is just how Symphony X rethought their musical universe in order to accommodate it by going against natural process and punter's expectations. While the band's sound has been populated with outrageous time signature changes, extrapolated harmonics, and extra textural production elementals -- like large choirs, keyboard sounds as large as the guitar sonics, and utterly orchestral and nearly operatic pretensions -- from the beginning, this recording, whose theme suggests it ripe for such excesses, moves in a sideways if not opposite direction. That's not to say that those elements are entirely missing -- choirs and orchestrals abound on the intro 'Oculus Ex Inferni' and 'The Walls of Babylon' and elsewhere, but there is a more direct approach at work here. While changes in meter and harmonic key shifts are ever present, they are secondary to the most primal of metal constructs: the riff. Guitarist Michael Romeo has concentrated on a more accessible approach because of the potentially difficult nature of the material and not only does it work, it offers another look at Symphony X as a power metal unit as daunting and bone crunchingly effective as any. The songs here have a direct appeal, pulling no punches despite their amazing compositional frameworks. Add to this Michael Pinnella's empathic keyboard runs and Russell Allen's vocals -- second in both expressiveness and power only to Ronnie James Dio's -- as well as the abundant blastbeat rhythms of Jason Rullo and Michael Lepond's propulsive yet guiding basslines and the equation goes beyond what we normally consider in the realm of prog metal. The ironic thing is that Paradise Lost is simultaneously more in-your-face aggro and musically nuanced as well as conceptually ambitious (check the gorgeous power balled 'The Sacrifice'). A few instances include the melodic fist pumping chorus in 'Set the World on Fire (The Lie of Lies),' the over the top knotty guitar and bass mania in 'Serpent's Kiss,' the moody piano chromatics in the title track with Allen's vocal unhurried and unforced, carrying a melody both melancholy and prophetic and you have something quite special. The layers of Romeo's guitar work on 'Seven' for their sheer dexterity, speed, and elocution are worthy of celebrating, but when they are woven into a lightning fast bassline and overdriven riff-like melodic structure, they are possibly even amazing. About the only real challenge of Paradise Lost, with its emphasis on Satan, is its follow-up based on Milton's sequel, Paradise Regained, making the redemption cycle complete (that would take a real philosophical shift and therefore be truly visionary as far as 21st century metal goes, but Symphony X is already working on it). Even so, Paradise Lost is a new high-water mark for this quintet. Symphony X should be at the forefront of metal, not relegated to cult status in the U.S.: in Europe they're enormous. ~ Thom Jurek

The final Canned Heat album to feature co-founder Alan Wilson, Future Blues was also one of their best, surprisingly restrained as a studio creation by the band, with the whole thing clocking in at under 36 minutes, as long as some single jams on their live discs. It was also one of their most stylistically diverse efforts. Most of what's here is very concise and accessible, even the one group-composed jam -- Alan Wilson's 'Shake It and Break It' and his prophetically titled 'My Time Ain't Long' (he would be dead the year this record was issued), which also sounds a lot like a follow-up to 'Going Up the Country' until its final, very heavy and up-close guitar coda. Other songs are a little self-consciously heavy, especially their version of Arthur 'Big Boy' Crudup's 'That's All Right, Mama.' Dr. John appears playing piano on the dark, ominous 'London Blues,' and arranges the horns on 'Skat,' which tries for a completely different kind of sound -- late-'40s style jump blues -- than that for which the group was usually known. And the band also turns in a powerhouse heavy guitar version of Wilbert Harrison's 'Let's Work Together.' The Beat Goes On reissue is very clean and extremely loud. [The 2000 reissue includes the bonus tracks 'Let's Work Together,' 'Skat,' 'Wooly Bully,' 'Christmas Blues,' and the 'Chipmunk Song.'] ~ Bruce Eder
A problem with bands that have been on the scene for over 40 years (count 'em) is that they can sometimes still write songs with titles like 'The Beat Goes On' and 'Buried Alive,' as if those tropes hadn't lost their edge several decades ago. On the other hand, when a band has played together for four decades its members have often learned one of rock & roll's great lessons: how to create maximum groove with minimal ingredients. So when the Pretty Things lay down a song as thunderous as 'Livin' in My Skin,' they do so with the ponderous grace and inexorable momentum of an elephant walking to water. They've also been around long enough to have heard some of their source material at the source, which means that they can deliver an ancient Delta blues like 'Feel Like Going Home' with a certain arch authority. (And if you want more cowbell, these guys can deliver that with authority as well -- check out the raunchy period piece 'Mimi.') On the downside, they sometimes abuse their elder-statesmen status to impose eight minutes of two-chord vamp on their hapless listeners ('[Blues For] Robert Johnson'), and the title track, which closes the album, does so with much more of a whimper than a bang. Not bad at all, but unless you're a die-hard fan you'll want to be a little selective. ~ Rick Anderson
Less Than Jake were far from novices when they entered the studio to record their 1995 debut album, Pezcore. Formed in 1992, they came into their own the following year with an exuberant blend of melodic ska-punk. Their enthusiasm was infectious, translating easily from the stage onto disc. By 1994, the group was barraging indie labels with its music, and in turn its 7' and 10' singles peppered the scene, with ubiquitous appearances on numerous compilations of the day. Thus it was to the relief of their many fans that in 1996 LTJ released Losers, Kings, and Things We Don't Understand, a 20-track set that bundled up many of their singles and compilation offerings. Of course, Pezcore was a classic set, but this one arguably best captures the spirit of the band's early years. It's the sheer exhilaration of the music that initially clobbers listeners, all zippy tempos, high-energy performances, and an unerring ear for a melody. In later years, LTJ would list the early Bay Area bands as their strongest influence, but initially they thanked Snuff for turning them from just another generic new-school group into something special. Their horns certainly made LTJ stand out, but listen hard and you'll hear the group's own twists on punk, from the snip of funk that infests 'Econolodged' to the twist of hard rock that pops up on 'Pez King' and 'Wish Pig,' the '60s riffs that rip through 'Shotgun' and 'Glumble,' and the jubilant take on old-school punk reinvented for a new generation. As for their covers, like Sid Vicious' take on 'My Way,' LTJ appropriate songs and make them their own. Although filled with anthems of the age, not every track here is a winner -- one can't bash out this much music this fast and turn out a gem every time -- but there are no clunkers, either. Every longstanding fan has his/her favorite tracks, and this reissue now allows members of a whole new generation to find their own within. A must-have set. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
Two complete LPs by the Art Ensemble of Chicago are reissued in full on this single CD. Recorded in Paris originally for the BYG label, these intriguing and diverse performances feature the Art Ensemble when they were a quartet (before drummer Don Moye joined). Trumpeter Lester Bowie, saxophonists Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman, and bassist Malachi Favors all are heard playing many other instruments: for example, Jarman plays soprano, alto, clarinet, oboe, flute, marimba, vibes, congas, bells, whistles, gongs, siren, and guitar. The wide-ranging music mostly succeeds at looking both backwards (in eccentric ways) and toward the future. Of particular interest are 'Old Time Religion,' some credible bebop on 'Dexterity,' the funky 'Rock Out,' a demented 'The Waltz,' and the lengthy jams on 'Song for Charles' and 'A Brain for the Seine.' Fascinating and always-colorful music that certainly breaks down a lot of musical barriers. ~ Scott Yanow
In the mid-'60s through early '70s, the British pop music industry was a well-oiled machine, cranking out bright, tuneful melodies at a feverish pace, and RPM's eighth CD collection of rare U.K. pop singles from female vocalists demonstrates just how deep the well goes on this stuff. With the exception of Tina Charles' brassy but over the top cover of Melanie's 'Bo Bo's Party' and the subtle but defiant 'I Don't Ever Want to Be Kicked by You' by the Stockingtops, the mood on these tunes is upbeat and the craft is polished and professional, with the production slick and the arrangements full-bodied, suggesting the British equivalent of classic Brill Building pop with a characteristic dollop of music hall theatrics. Many of these singers supplemented their paychecks as solo acts by doing backing vocals on sessions by other artists (or by doing commercials -- a promotional recording for Bush audio equipment leads off this disc), and there's a certain uniformity to the performing styles of these artists. But a few of the tracks do stand out, such as the high-gloss soul stylings of Maxine Nightingale, the aggressively chirpy harmonies of the Cameos, the very American leanings of the Chanters, and the sweet, breathy confidence of the Paper Dolls. And even the lesser selections are fine examples of studiocraft at its height, from the days when the bigger the studio orchestra and the more audacious the arrangement, the better. While some might find a certain kitsch value in this stuff, Stockingtop Pop is good enough to be appreciated without irony, and Michael Robson's liner notes offer plenty of background data on these forgotten songbirds. ~ Mark Deming
The expanded CD release of this second Vanilla Fudge album is much more accessible than the original vinyl version because of the inclusion of a number of cover tunes, most notably Beatles songs. The revealing liner notes that Sundazed project manager Tim Livingston adds to the reissues of these Atco albums helps put this influential band in a better light. The Beat Goes On is a difficult record, especially after the explosion that was their debut. The single from their previous album, Vanilla Fudge, originally charted in the Top 100 in the U.S. in 1967. (Britain was more hip to the group.) They finally hit in America in the summer of 1968, but had already begun to influence Deep Purple and the Rotary Connection, among others. The problem with this project is that they failed to influence themselves. Bassist Tim Bogert notes that 'The Beat Goes On was the album that killed the band,' while guitarist Vinny Martell adds 'we had already started our second album when Shadow (Morton) had this other concept idea for The Beat Goes On.' Morton had produced the Shangri Las, not the Beatles, and this creative effort was by a group with only two hit singles arriving on the scene around the time of Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Morton set before the boys a daunting task which needed much, much better execution. Renaissance, which they were recording simultaneous with this, at least included a Donovan tune, 'Season of the Witch.' The exotic wandering would have been better served by a reworking of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' across a side of the disc instead of the keyboard notes which reference the tune. Even a killer guitar version of 'The Beat Goes On' would have been more exciting than '18th Century Variations on a Theme by Mozart' or noodlings that can't decide if they are 'Chatanooga Choo Choo' or 'Theme to the Match Game.' For a group of impressionable young kids out of high school, as referenced in the liners, this must've been extremely rough. The expanded CD has jam session versions of Elvis Presley's 'Hound Dog' and the Beatles' 'I Feel Fine,' 'She Loves You,' 'Day Tripper,' 'I Want to Hold Your Hand,' and 'You Can't Do That.' Any of these extended à la 'Eleanor Rigby' from their debut would be more desirable than the interview-type questions about sex: the Beatles' interest in 'Indian meditation' (sitar enters here, and how would the VF know?): audio newsclips of John F. Kennedy, Hitler, and others, all a very strong argument against artistic control for some producers. Exploring the initial ideas that brought them fame was what was expected of Vanilla Fudge. What would you rather hear, readings from The Bible or the single from January 1968, 'The Look of Love' b/w 'Where Is My Mind'? Thankfully, Sundazed has included the Bacharach/David tune and two additional Mark Stein titles, 'All in Your Mind' and the aforementioned B side, 'Where Is My Mind,' on the expanded Renaissance album, the real follow-up to the Vanilla Fudge debut. Historically important, listening to this archive piece is truly a labor of love, with the emphasis on labor. ~ Joe Viglione
This double-live CD, made on BJH's last tour with Wooly Wolstenholme, is one of the better live albums to come out of the progressive rock genre. Though not as exciting as Genesis Live or as majestic as Yessongs, it shows the group in excellent form, playing and harmonizing beautifully and doing many of their best songs, among them 'Child of the Universe,' 'Rock and Roll Star,' 'Poor Man's Moody Blues,' 'For No One,' and 'Mockingbird' (the latter never sounded more beautiful). All of the tracks work significantly better as live cuts than they do in their original studio form. Lees' guitar and Wolstenholme's keyboards work together very well on-stage and within the songs. The only complaint one could have is the price -- for just under 80 minutes of music, the two CDs could have been combined on one disc. The sound is good, though there is no real audience 'presence,' except between songs. [The 2006 British import version has several bonus tracks: 'The World Goes On,' 'Medicine Man,' and 'Hymn for the Children.'] ~ Bruce Eder
The more things change, the more Lemmy stays the same. He is a pillar of stability in the wobbly world of metal, where bands and trends come and go. Almost every Motorhead album sounds like the last, albeit with a couple new twists thrown in. And that's not a bad thing. Indeed, this 2004 platter serves up the expected blend of thrashers, mid-tempo grinders, and amped-up, old-time rock & roll, but INFERNO feels like the group's spark has been rekindled. The most obvious infusion of energy comes from guest guitarist Steve Vai, who whips out his signature shredding technique on the thundering, rapid fire 'Terminal Show' and the sludgy 'Down on Me'. To Vai's credit, the legendary axeman adapts to Motorhead's style instead of showboating. Other surprises surface--the melodic guitar leads of 'Keys to the Kingdom' set over a bed of strings without bass or drums, and the acoustic blues ditty with harmonica ('Whorehouse Blues') that brings INFERNO to a refreshingly low-key finish. The longest running line-up in Motorhead's history proves that old dogs may not always learn new tricks, but they can reinvent the old ones just fine.
After the incredible critical acclaim bestowed upon their management mates and musical stepbrothers King's X, the Galactic Cowboys were quickly snapped up by the usually shrewd (at least in the early '90s) folks at Geffen Records, who no doubt had visions of turning the Houston scene into the next Seattle. Sadly, like King's X, the Cowboys' mind-boggling sonic tapestries would prove much too complex and highbrow for all but the most specialized listeners and sympathetic members of the press. After all, with their Metallica-like heaviness, Beatlesque three-part vocal harmonies ,and wildly fluctuating rhythms, songs like 'My School' and first single 'I'm Not Amused' (introduced by a mooing cow -- a sign of the band's quirky sense of humor) were simply unplayable at any commercial radio station. And though it may have proved a wiser choice for the airwaves, the slightly less adventurous 'Why Can't You Believe in Me' (featuring countless layers of guitars the likes of which would not be seen again until the Smashing Pumpkins' first few albums) was probably passed up on because it sounded a bit too much like King's X. But if you dispense with commercial considerations, this remains a stunning album for the open-minded listener who will revel in discovering new secrets with every listen. After taking a swipe at the Exxon Valdez disaster with the excellent 'Kaptain Krude' just to prove they weren't complete space cadets, the Galactic Cowboys really launch into outer space with the five-song suite contained on side two. Beginning with the monstrous 'Sea of Tranquility,' which sums up their vast array of sounds better than any other song, the band goes on to unleash their purest thrash metal moment with the bloody 'Killing Floor' (the tale of a butcher turned serial killer) and zip through two brief interludes (the hillbilly stomp 'Pump Up the Space Suit' and the dreamy 'Ranch on Mars [Reprise]') before giving way to the soft acoustic strum of 'Speak to Me,' which gradually builds for ten minutes toward a bizarre conclusion. The latter may be a bit long-winded, but you probably won't care if you made it this far. The Cowboys would grow more accessible with subsequent releases, but strangely, they never sounded as natural and confident as they did on this over the top debut. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia
The third album by Erik Rutan's post-Morbid Angel project Hate Eternal may be the singer/guitarist's purest achievement, if not his best. I, Monarch is 40 minutes of distilled essence of death metal, with Rutan's Cookie Monster vocals declaiming crypto-religious S&M lyrics over his own hypnotically repetitive riffs and flashy, technically excellent solos, while a close-to-inaudible bassist and the superhuman blastbeat drummer Derek Roddy hurtle along at near-impossible speeds behind him. Those who love this sort of thing will be in awe, not least because Rutan manages to include a few actual tunes (or at least refrains) alongside the jackhammer throb. Those whose tolerance for death metal is lower should nonetheless at least stay for the end: the instrumental 'Faceless One' is something of a breakthrough, and the best song on the album by some distance. After nine tracks that whiz past in a death metal blur, Rutan slows the tempo here incrementally, but just enough to allow himself and Roddy the breathing room to show off hitherto speed-obscured aspects of their playing. Roddy in particular comes off exceedingly well: he may be the best drummer in the entire subgenre. If Rutan chose to explore this variation on what's becoming a well-worn theme, Hate Eternal might be on to something interesting. ~ Stewart Mason
