This unique book tells the story of a select group of schools and teachers who have managed to beat the odds in terms of improving elementary students reading achievement. Originating with the CIERA School Change Project directed by Barbara Taylor and David Pearson, it was subsequently expanded to include the work of other research teams doing similar work. It combines large scale studies of effective schools and teachers (Part I) with case studies of individual schools and teachers who have successfully transformed research findings into situation-specific strategies appropriate to their schools and classrooms (Parts II and III). The book's distinct contribution is showing that no matter how consistent the research findings on effective school and classroom practice, groups of teachers must improvise their own situation-specific programs and practices. In short, they must be able to create variations on a common theme. Key features of this outstanding new volume include: *Integration of research and cases--One cannot fully understand research-based general principles without knowing how they play themselves out in specific settings. Similarly, one cannot fully understand cases without seeing the commonalities across different schools and classrooms sharing similar goals. This book provides both perspectives. *Diverse cases--The schools and classrooms depicted in this book are urban, rural, and suburban; poor and middle class; and English-only and bilingual. Rather than telling readers how to beat the odds, it provides them with a wide variety of cases from which they can extrapolate to build their own customized teaching programs and practices. *Summarizing section--The final section contains a summary of research on effective schools and teachers and a concluding chapter by Gerry Duffy and Jim Hoffman in which they reflect on the book's content and possible directions for future research. The book is targeted to both in-service elementary teachers and literacy students in advanced college courses.

Creations of the Mind presents sixteen original essays by theorists from a wide variety of disciplines who have a shared interest in the nature of artifacts and their implications for the human mind. All the papers are written specially for this volume, and they cover a broad range of topics concerned with the metaphysics of artifacts, our concepts of artifacts and the categories that they represent, the emergence of an understanding of artifacts in infants' cognitive development, as well as the evolution of artifacts and the use of tools by non-human animals. This volume will be a fascinating resource for philosophers, cognitive scientists, and psychologists, and the starting point for future research in the study of artifacts and their role in human understanding, development, and behaviour. As an artist, Chip Taylor is mostly known as a country-oriented singer/songwriter. As a songwriter, however, he's mostly known for the most commercially successful of his compositions, all of them popularized by other artists between the mid-'60s and mid-'70s. This CD -- another exemplary entry in Ace's series of compilations of the most famous and/or interesting covers of work by outstanding '60s songwriters -- has 25 of them, ranging from a number one hit to a previously unissued demo. That number one hit, of course, is the Troggs' 'Wild Thing,' which kicks off this anthology and remains by far his most famous song. But the two dozen remaining tracks on this disc (written by Taylor alone or in collaboration with others) are also generally quite impressive, if not as hard-rocking as 'Wild Thing,' and recorded by a very impressive roster of performers. Taylor's work was usually more pop-soul-country-oriented than 'Wild Thing,' as heard in some of the more well-known songs here, like Merrilee Rush's 1968 hit 'Angel of the Morning,' Lorraine Ellison's 'Try (Just a Little Bit Harder),' Evie Sands' 'I Can't Let Go' (in turn covered for a hit by the Hollies), the Pozo-Seco Singers' 'I Can Make It with You,' and Barbara Lewis' 'Make Me Belong to You.' As usual in this series, some quality recordings weren't included -- like Evie Sands' 'Picture Me Gone,' the Hollies' 'I Can't Let Go,' or the Troggs' hit recording of 'Any Way That You Want Me' (here represented by a far more obscure version by Tina Mason) -- owing to licensing hurdles, or the wish to avoid presenting more than one version of any song. Also as usual, however, Ace throws in a heap of obscurities and lesser-known cuts by stars who are at or almost on the same level, also demonstrating Taylor's versatility as a tuneful composer and romantic lyricist able to adapt to numerous formats. Some such highlights on this collection include Walter Jackson's lush soul ballad 'Welcome Home': Madeleine Bell's delightful uptempo pop-soul take on 'Picture Me Gone,' which deserved to be a hit and never was: 'I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face,' one of Aretha Franklin's finest pre-Atlantic recordings: 'Don't Say It Baby,' one of Dusty Springfield's better early LP cuts: and 'Storybook Children,' a groundbreaking interracial duet between Billy Vera and Judy Clay in its hit version, but here represented by a previously unissued demo on which Vera duets with Nona Hendryx. Even some of the songs that clearly aren't up to Taylor's highest standards are entertaining, like Reparata & the Delrons' Shangri-Las-like 'Tommy.' Elsewhere some notable names like Peggy Lee, Patti Austin, the Hollies, and Little Eva weigh in with fairly little-known tracks, while the mid-'70s recordings by Stoney Edwards and Taylor himself -- the ones of latest vintage on this CD -- point toward the country sound with which he was ultimately most comfortable. ~ Richie Unterberger
GWP productions and the GWP label worked with a host of soul performers based in New York and Detroit, though as the liner notes to this compilation frankly note, their 'successes were few and far between.' This 24-track CD has a couple dozen tracks cut under their direction from the late '60s and early '70s, half of them previously unreleased. A reissue with an unwieldy title such as GWP NYC TLC Vol. 2 is obviously geared toward the collector market, though even soul specialists might not view it as a jump-off-the-shelf item owing to the pretty average level of the music and the obscurity of most of the performers. Of the numerous artists here, only the Hesitations made a commercial impact, and a mild one at that, though some might recognize Larry Banks as the composer of the early soul classic 'Go Now' (made into a British Invasion hit by the Moody Blues). As a composite, the CD is the sound of a company casting about for a hit, knowing what it's doing production-wise, and recruiting skilled performers, but not having that something special needed to make either a commercial or artistic impact. It sure tried a lot of approaches, tending toward the slightly glossier soul style of the period, though some bluesiness creeps into the efforts by Banks and Benny Gordon. Occasionally a track stands out as worthy of closer attention than most, like the Hesitations' lusciously harmonized cover of Barbara Mason's hit 'Yes I'm Ready' or 'How Long Can This Last' by Debbie Taylor, whose despondent wailing vocals have an urgency missing from many of these artists. Influences are sometimes pretty obvious for those who like music of a certain type, Alice Clark's 'You Hit Me (Right Where It Hurt Me)' sounding a great deal like an end-of-'60s Motown production. ~ Richie Unterberger
