Simon Armitage's new collection is by turns a voice and a chorus: a hyper-vivid array of dramatic monologues, allegories, parables and tall tales. Here comes everybody: Snoobie and Carla, Lippincott, Wittmann, Yoshioka, Bambuck, Dr Amsterdam, Preminger. The man whose wife drapes a border-curtain across the middle of the marital home; the English astronaut with a terrestrial outlook on life; an orgiastic cast of unreconstructed pie-worshipers at a Northern sculpture farm; the soap-opera supremacists at their zoo-wedding; the driver who picks up hitchhikers as he hurtles towards a head-on collision with Thatcherism; a Christian cheese-shop proprietor in the wrong part of town; the black bear with a dark secret, the woman who curates giant snowballs in the chest freezer. Celebrities and nobodies, all come to the ball.I am a sperm whale. I carry up to 2.5 tonnes of an oil-likebalm in my huge, coffin shaped head. I have a brain thesize of a basketball, and on that basis alone am entitled tomy opinions. I am a sperm whale. When I breathe in, the fluid in my head cools to a dense wax and I nosedive into the depths. My song, available on audiocassette and compact disc is a comfort to divorcees, astrologists and those who have 'pitched the quavering canvas tent of their thoughts on the rim of the dark crater'. - from 'The Christening'The storyteller who steps in and out of this human tapestry changes, trickster-style, from poem to poem, but retains some identifying traits: the melancholy of the less deceived, crossed with an undercover idealism. And he shares with many of his characters a star-gazing capacity for belief, or for being 'genuine in his disbelief'.Language is on the loose in these poems, which cut and run across the parterre of poetic decorum with their cartoon-strip energies and air of misrule. Armitage creates world after world, peculiar yet always particular, where the only certainty is the unexpected.
The Neurology of Eye Movements provides clinicians with a synthesis of current scientific information that can be applied to the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of ocular motility. Basic scientists will also benefit from descriptions of how data from anatomical, electrophysiological, pharmacological, and imaging studies can be directly applied to the study of disease. By critically reviewing such basic studies, the authors build a conceptual framework that can be applied to the interpretation of abnormal ocular motor behavior at the bedside. These syntheses are summarized in displays, new figures, schematics and tables. Early chapters discuss the visual need and neural basis for each functional class of eye movements. Two large chapters deal with the evaluation of double vision and systematically evaluate how many disorders of the central nervous system affect eye movements. This edition has been extensively rewritten, and contains many new figures and an up-to-date section on the treatment of abnormal eye movements such as nystagmus. A major innovation has been the development of an option to read the book from a compact disc, make use of hypertext links (which bridge basic science to clinical issues), and view the major disorders of eye movements in over 60 video clips. This volume will provide pertinent, up-to-date information to neurologists, neuroscientists, ophthalmologists, visual scientists, otalaryngologists, optometrists, biomedical engineers, and psychologists.

The Garland Handbook of African Music is comprised of essays from The Garland Encyclopedia of World Music: Volume 1, Africa, (1997). Revised and updated, the essays offer detailed, regional studies of the different musical cultures of Africa and examine the ways in which music helps to define the identity of this particular area. Part one provides an in-depth introduction to Africa. Part two focuses on issues and processes, such as notation and oral tradition, dance in communal life, and intellectual property. Part three focuses on the different regions, countries, and cultures of Africa with selected regional case studies. The second edition has been expanded to include exciting new scholarship that has been conducted since the first edition was published. Questions for Critical Thinking at the end of each major section guide and focus attention on what issues, musical and cultural, arise when one studies the music of Africa - issues that might not occur in the study of other musics of the world. An accompanying audio compact disc offers musical examples of some of the music of Africa.

Rev-Ola's reissue of Martin Denny's classic Exotica, Vol. 2 is literally twice as long as either the album or the original CD issue. In mood it's more subdued and a bit less adventurous. Basically, what's presented here in some ramshackle order are all of the mono and stereo mixes of the album tracks so, quite literally, you get the same album twice, back to back. But given the wider sound of the stereo mixes and an excellent remastering job for compact disc, it's like hearing two different albums. The stereo mixes don't pick up the tempo much, but they add enough extra space and other sounds that are either nonexistent or flat on the mono set that they feel like two very different offerings. Recommended to those who already bought this disc on CD in its original form. ~ Thom Jurek
In 2003, SPV released Gunfire at Midnight/Pass the Hat, which contained two complete albums -- Gunfire at Midnight (originally released in 1992 on Crisis) and Pass the Hat (originally released on SPV in 1996) -- by the Brandos on one compact disc. ~ Gregory McIntosh
In 2002, Cherry Red released Pointing the Finger/Poloticz, which contained two complete albums -- Pointing the Finger (1981, originally released on Cherry Red) and Poloticz (1982, also originally released on Cherry Red) -- by Kevin Coyne on one compact disc.
In 1996, Metal Blade released Curse/Nightmares, which contained two complete albums -- Curse (1986), originally released on Enigma, and Nightmares (1987), originally released on Metal Blade -- by Omen on one compact disc. ~ Tim Sendra
Cornetist Johnny Dunn made his first recordings under the auspices of cabaret blues singer Mamie Smith, more or less leading the band that accompanied her and cutting quite a number of instrumental recordings as well. Whether the group was called Mamie Smith's Jazz Hounds or Johnny Dunn's Original Jazz Hounds, it represented one of the first African American bands to make records on a regular basis. When Dunn's complete works were reissued on compact disc by RST and Document in the 1990s, the material fit onto two CDs because virtually everything he recorded in collaboration with singing actress Edith Wilson was included. Released in 2000 by the Frog label, Cornet Blues focuses upon Dunn's instrumentals with a small sampling of Perry Bradford's singing thrown in for good measure. Dunn, a master of both bugling and muted effects, is heard in the company of reedman Garvin Bushell, trombonist Herb Fleming, a banjoist named Sam Speed, as well as pianists Leroy Tibbs, Jelly Roll Morton, James P. Johnson, and Fats Waller. This album is packed with delightfully antiquated dance music and hot jazz. An even more complete edition would combine all of the Jazz Hound instrumentals released under both Smith's and Dunn's names, but that compendium (which would comfortably fill two CDs) has yet to materialize. ~ arwulf arwulf
Comprised of songs cut during the final 13 months of the Nice's existence, Elegy is a must-own title for fans of Keith Emerson, offering his best live performance on piano ('Hang On to a Dream') ever to get a legal release, showcasing his organ playing on unique and beguiling arrangements of Tchaikovsky and Dylan material, and ending with a live version of the Nice's showstopper, 'America.' CD buyers should be aware, however, that the British compact disc release from Virgin Records offers superior sound and a lot more music (albeit from their psychedelic era) by the band. ~ Bruce Eder
